CGI is your one stop for Iowa City epoxy flooring
contractors.
CGI began in 2006 by Shane Coohey. Shane, from Dyersville, IA, came to the Iowa City area in 1996 and began framing residential homes and later began general contracting then started Coohey Construction in 2001. A customer in 2006 expressed the desire to have epoxy flooring in his garage and Shane began training in epoxy installation and saw a need for epoxy flooring in the area and decided to begin this venture in 2006. Since 2006, Shane, and his team, have completed hundreds of floor coating projects including flake epoxy floors, metallic epoxy, quartz epoxy floors, concrete overlay floors, stained floors, and commercial concrete coatings such as urethane cement floors and industrial sealers.
At CGI we use only the finest products, all of which being chemical resistant, and vastly superior to any product that can be purchased from a home improvement store. These products are manufactured right here in the Midwest, and are engineered to provide maximum performance against Iowa’s toughest weather conditions, even road salt and humidity are no match for our epoxy floors.
CGI makes certain to apply them with uncompromising surface preparation and a high attention to detail installation. Our process always begins with preparing the surface to the absolute highest level. This is the most important part of the job and often not performed by shoddy or inexperienced contractors.

Iowa City and Cedar Rapids concrete staining (such as acid staining) and epoxy coated floors (such as epoxy garage flooring) typically require a multi-step process. Not all epoxy flooring project are the same – but for a typical epoxy flooring installation, we will complete the preparation on your floor on the first day. After taking special care to tape off and protect relevant areas of your project space, we use grinding machines to clean and sand the surface. This can include a large grinder, and small grinder and even a hand grinder for tough to reach edges & corners.
On the second day, we apply a thick coat of commercial grade waterproofing sealer. This is followed by covering any cracks with a filler to ensure a smooth surface. Within 24hrs, we the apply the colored epoxy base coat, and immediately after applying vinyl flakes with the epoxy is still in liquid form. If needed or requested by the customer, we then spread a sand-like anti-slip material. On the final day, we apply a commercial grade clear coat which securely locks down the decorative chip, strengthens the system, and gives your new epoxy floor the kind of finish usually seen in high-end industrial or commercial buildings.
We do have the ability to embed artwork in the floor, such as logos, unique floor patterns, or custom artwork.
